because i'm still rather new to this whole 'have kids in school' thing, i failed to request time off for their spring break. by the time i realized that i needed to have off, everyone else in the office (sans one co-worker) had already taken off which basically meant that i was screwed. i couldn't leave just one person to run the entire office, so i had to find alternative arrangements for the girls.
thankfully, my mother-in-law's spring break was the exact same week as my girls'. she agreed to watch them and then informed me that they were heading to texas. oye. texas? yes, indeed, they were heading to dallas to visit my brother-in-law and his family. if i wanted someone to watch the girls, they'd have to go to texas. i really didn't have a choice but to say 'yes.'
on friday night, at 8:03pm, my in-laws drove away with my babies. they always drive at night so that the kids sleep which i totally get. we drove through the night when we went to florida last year with them, but it felt different this time. i felt absolutely powerless. at least when i was with them, i knew that my girls were safe. this time around, i was left to wonder and worry all night long. i made jas call his dad around midnight and when i woke up at 6:45am, i called him myself. i just needed to touch base and know that everything was okay. and it was.
and it is.
but, oh how i miss them. they've only been gone since friday and it feels like it's been weeks. my sister-in-law has been sending me pictures of their daily adventures, so i feel somewhat connected, but i still feel empty. i'm trying to enjoy this break from them, but it's a little hard. it's far too quiet. it's far too lazy without them to play with.
jas and i have tried to take advantage of our time alone. on saturday, we borrowed 3 movies from the library and bought 1 dozen boston creme donuts from dunkin' donuts. we sat around all day, watching movies and sitting on our butts, downing donuts. it was actually quite nice! that night, we headed to a comedy club with another of jas's brothers and his wife. on sunday, we went to eat at olive garden and enjoyed a nice, quiet dinner. and talked about the girls, of course.
i'm sure that just when i begin to adjust to the silence and enjoy myself, it will be time for the girls to arrive back home. and then, i'll be wondering when i'll get my next break!
