i have come to the realization that i'm not a fan of working out. and yet, and yet, i hate the way my body is morphing into a blob - ever so slowly, ever so surely. i remember when i weighed 120 lbs. as my weight slowly increased, i thought i'd start worrying when it is 130 lbs. and then, when it hit 130 lbs, i told myself that i'd start doing something about it when i hit 140 lbs. well, 140 lbs. has come and gone and i'm now over the 150 lb mark. ((did i seriously just confess to that?))
nothing has changed between the time i weighed 120 lbs and now. i eat exactly the same. the only thing that has increased is my age and the amount of time that i sit on my butt. at my old job, i was always on the go. i rarely sat in my office, but was all over campus doing this or that. my current job, however, isn't quite so active. i sit at my desk and crunch numbers all day long. there is no need for me to get up, except to pick something up off of the printer. as a result, i have gained about 15 lbs over the last (nearly) two years.
i'm not a fan of working out really hard and feeling the burn with sweat dripping down my face. i'd much rather work out by vacuuming or biking with my kids or doing the laundry - some activity that tricks me into working out when i don't really feel like i am. as such, i've begun working little things into my job here to trick myself into burning a few extra calories.
1) i walk with two ladies that i used to work with in my old division on campus. they have about 30+ years on me, but that's okay. i like their pace and i love the advice they give me as a young mom. our first day was today and i had a ball. plus, they keep me accountable.
2) instead of using the restroom across the hall from my office suite, i walk up the stairs to the second floor restroom. then, i take the scenic route back to my office by walking to the third floor and then back down. this is a good break for both my body and my mind.
3) i'm keeping gum in my desk. when i get bored, i eat. unfortunately, the ladies in my office always bring in a ton of baked goods and sweets. it's killing me. so, when i get the urge to munch on something, i pop a piece of gum in my mouth instead.
i know that these little activities won't make me look like a supermodel, but that's okay. i'm not going for the super svelte look anyway; i just want to be able to fit comfortably in my clothes again. so, if you have any more suggestions, please pass them along! every little bit helps!

hide the TV remote so when you want to change channels, you actually have to get your butt of the couch. wink, wink.
