the concussion.

last friday sucked. actually, saturday sucked worse, but it all began on friday. little mama attends a before school program at the local elementary school (before being bussed to her actual school for the school day). baby angel and i always drop little mama off first before making our way to baby angel's school. last friday was no different.

after we said our good-byes, i scooped up alana and off we went. i was making my way down the stairs in my high heeled, black, leather boots. the stairs were slick from a rain the night before and i soon learned that high heeled boots and slick stairs are not a good combination. somehow my feet went out from underneath me and i began to fall. hard. i started falling towards my left (the side i was holding alana on), so instinctively, i slung her to my right and took the full blow of the brick wall beside me to my head.

my head immediately went warm. i knew that the hit i took on my head is bad, so i began feeling in my ears and on my face to see if i was bleeding. thankfully, there was no blood. but, ohmygosh, how my head POUNDED! the pain split through my head and i realized that alana was crying. she said her hand hurt and i examined it only to find a small scrape where her hand had gotten stuck between my body and the wall. i remember saying cheerfully, "it's okay! we're fine. i have a headache. we're okay! i'm going to call daddy and he'll be here in a few minutes to help." i didn't believe a word i was saying though. i was woozy and nauseous and the pain that jolted through my head scared the crap out of me.

the next thing i remember, i'm sitting in the front seat of my car and alana is still standing outside in the parking lot. i had her climb in the front seat with me and i dialed jas. "i'm at leah's school. you need to take me to the hospital. i think i have a concussion." then the emotions got to me and i started to bawl. i was terrified that i had really hurt myself. i knew that i had hurt myself somehow, but didn't know the extent as to how bad.

a teacher from the school happened to be leaving as alana and i sat in the car. i saw her back out and then the next thing i knew, she was standing in my window, mouthing the words "are you okay?" i explained what had happened and she took alana inside and brought me back an icepack. she sat with me, comforted me, and kept me company while i waited for jas to show up. a few minutes later, i saw another teacher come out of the school, holding both of my girls' hands. alana seemed okay, but leah had tears streaming down her face. she was so upset that she started coughing (and nearly vomiting). i held both girls on my lap in the front seat and tried to convince them that i was okay. a few minutes later, jas pulled up.

leah went back inside. we dropped alana off at school and headed to the ER. i nearly vomited twice on the way there. jas helped me walk into the ER and the nurse immediately grabbed me a wheelchair. and wouldn't you know it, as jas was checking me in and searching for my insurance card in my wallet, another nurse said to him, "wow! it looks like you've had some serious surgery. what happened to your head!?" i didn't talk, but thought to myself, "ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? I'M THE ONE THAT HIT HER HEAD ON A BRICK WALL AND CAN BARELY STAND AND YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT *HIM*!?"

jas, the sweet and concerned husband that he is, kindly said, "ma'am, i'm not hear to talk about myself. i'm really worried about my wife." but, still she pressed him. finally, i snapped at her, "he's got a brain tumor." and, of course, when the dr. came in to see me, he inquired about jas as well. "helllllloooo, people! spotlight on me. i'm the one in pain here. he's had his day!" the dr. ordered a CT scan for me. thankfully, it came back okay. he wrote me a prescription for some pain meds and anti-nausea medicine and sent me on my way.

unfortunately, the next day was worse. i called my in-laws at 7:15 am, crying and begging them to please come take the girls for the weekend. i knew i needed to be in a vicodin-induced state, but couldn't really care for the girls while doped up. thankfully, they agreed and drove down to get the babies. i spent the whole day feeling dazed, confused, and nauseous.

and now, it's been a whole week since it happened. i'm not dazed or confused or nauseous anymore, but i still have a dull headache. i read that the symptoms could last for a few weeks, so i'm not too worried. i am, however, ready to have my head feel normal again!
