she might be famous.

i think i mentioned once on my old blog that i started singing back up in my church. i loved it and have been doing it nearly every sunday since then. our worship leader, however, switched churches about a month or so ago. since then, we've been floundering a bit in the song area. i had a feeling it was coming, but was a bit uneasy when i opened an email from my pastor, asking if i would join in the rotation to lead worship.

lead worship? um, no thanks. i'm a back up girl, remember? i'm not the leader of the band.

being who i am, i said 'yes.' i led worship for the very first time about a month ago. i was so incredibly nervous, but i did okay. we have a piano that you can record on, so before our old worship leader left, she recorded about 20 songs for us. i used 4 of those songs to lead worship that sunday. and since that sunday, every one who leads worship has been playing off of those 20 songs. it was getting boring. oh, so boring.

i was up again to lead this past sunday. i took a little piano (12 yrs to be exact), so i called my sister to see if she could send me some music. i had big plans that i was going to learn these new songs, record them, and just press 'play' on sunday morning. my plan went awry when i called our sound guy.

let me give you a bit of background on our sound guy. he's an award winning, pulitzer prize nominated, singer/musician who just released his 7th album about 2 weeks ago. he's played in some of the biggest venues and opened for some of the biggest names in christian music. his sound has been likened to bob dylan and ben harper. to sum it all up, this guy is pretty amazing. okay, enough about him...

so, i called him to see if he knew how i could record more songs onto the piano and he tells me that he never learned because he doesn't like the sound of canned music. the more he talked, the more inferior i felt. soon, i wanted to scream, "well, some of us aren't professional musicians! some of us don't feel comfortable playing in front of people!" finally, i blurted, "well, then will YOU play guitar for me?" he agreed and we planned to meet last thursday for a rehearsal.

i joked that he would never agree to play for me again, because he had only heard of 2 of the 5 songs i had picked and i never sung them in the key they were written. sweet guy...he transcribed all of the music to bring it down to where i felt comfortable singing. i was very worried at the start of our session, but an hour and 15 minutes later, i felt a little more comfortable.

this past sunday, we rocked it!!!! it was so much fun and we had a blast. we got so much positive feedback after worship that i beamed from ear to ear. i had done what i set out to do - energize worship. i felt on top of the world! but then, just then, as i was heading out the door, luke (the sound guy/my guitar guy) asked if i would sing for him this upcoming sunday. he is scheduled to lead worship and asked if he could just play while i sang. i was beyond blown away! i stuttered, "um, yeah, sure. anytime." he called me last night to tell me what he's got planned for us to sing and i'm excited.

i've been told before that i'm a good singer - mostly by family members, but i don't have much confidence in my abilities. but when luke asked if i would sing with him, i was nearly speechless. to know that he thinks i'm good enough to take over while he simply plays guitar was the biggest compliment i could ever hope to receive.
